Welcome to Zimbabwe! It's time to get your safari started, and after some minor introductory formalities, we'll get you out there on this wonderful safari journey of discovery.

Harare is one of the most appealing cities anywhere in southern Africa, and you'll enjoy spending some time here. There's so much to see and do in town, with the city's attractions including a fantastic dining and nightlife scene, as well as plenty of museums, galleries, and other attractions as well. Even with all of this, your main highlight is likely to be Harare's people.

Day 2

Great Zimbabwe

One of the most significant historical sites in southern Africa, Great Zimbabwe transports you back in time, to a golden age of Bantu civilization and to the fabled capital of the Queen of Sheba. Among the many highlights of the stone ruins are the Great Enclosure and the Hill Complex, while the museum has some of the famous soapstone bird carvings for which the site is famous.

You're staying at the excellent Lodge at the Ancient City on your visit to the site of Great Zimbabwe. The lodge has a swimming pool, restaurant, and big, attractive rooms decorated in bold safari colors. There's some beautiful stonework and clever use of natural boulders around the public areas, and the lodge is surrounded by trees.

Day 3

Matobo National Park

There's so much to see and experience at Matobo National Park, and it will come as no surprise that it's a Unesco World Heritage–listed site. There's wildlife here, to be sure, and above all this means the opportunity to see black and white rhinos. Then there's the landscape piled high with epic granite boulders (known as kopjes) that are such a visually arresting part of the park. Other major highlights include extant examples of San rock art, the grave of Cecil Rhodes, and extraordinary views from a number of lookouts.

The lodge is just outside Matobo National Park, and you might even get to go looking for rhinos.

Day 5

Hwange National Park

Get to know incredible Hwange National Park. This is a brilliant place to see wildlife, whether it's the Big Five, the epic battles between lions and elephants, or the lion offspring of Cecil, the world's best-known lion who lived here until 2015. This vast park has terrific safari infrastructure but also has fantastic wilderness trails where you can immerse yourself in the silence of wild Africa. Hwange is in western Zimbabwe, close to the border with Botswana, and is part of the vitally important Kavango–Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area.

Victoria Falls will leave you spellbound with its scale and majesty: it really is one of the most remarkable natural scenes in Africa. It's not hard to see why locals call it Mosi-oa-Tunya, or the ‘smoke that thunders’.
