Gaze in wonder at the scale and sheer beauty of Victoria Falls, or Mosi-oa-Tunya (the ‘smoke that thunders’) as locals call it. It's an incredible experience whether it's your first time or you're coming back for more.

Chobe National Park

Welcome to Botswana's best national park for watching wildlife. Chobe is like an extension of the Okavango Delta, and contains two of Botswana's most rewarding wildlife areas: Savuti and Chobe Riverfront. Big cats are a real feature in these parts, but it's the big herds of really big elephants that will provide many of your most memorable sightings.

You'll be staying Chobe Bush Lodge, which is in Kasane, just across the road from the Chobe River. The beautiful grounds have acacia trees, a swimming pool, open-sided bar and restaurant, and rooms that are spacious and beautifully designed. It's a perfect place for both seeing the town and for visiting Chobe National Park.

Day 5

Makgadikgadi Pans National Park

Watch as the sun sets out over the eternal horizon of the salt pans, or watch lions hunt along the shore of the often-dry Boteti River. It's all possible in Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, an excellent park that also hosts an annual zebra migration, has meerkats and brown hyenas, and generally sees fewer visitors than most other Botswana parks.

There's no easier way to see elephants in Botswana than by staying at Elephant Sands. The whole place surrounds a waterhole where elephants come down to drink around the clock, and whether you're in the campsite, one of the large safari tents, or in the bar-restaurant and pool area, you'll be really close to the elephants.

Day 6

Okavango Delta

You'll be exploring the Okavango Delta, one of Africa's most remarkable natural places. Every year, the Delta floods and every year the trails are different depending on the water levels. The interplay of water and dry land makes for some fascinating wildlife encounters. Expect sightings of elephants, hippos, crocs, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, and more, and the big cats are never far away.

Sedia Riverside Hotel is your base while you're in Maun, and it's a good one. Most of the appealing rooms have their own private terrace or balcony that looks out over the hotel's gardens, and the riverside location is a real plus. Maun can get very warm, and the swimming pool is perfect on a hot afternoon. There's also a bar and restaurant at the hotel.
